Who we are

NOVA Cidade — Urban Analytics Lab is an applied research center dedicated to the processing and analysis of urban and territorial data, aiming to contribute to the construction of smarter, more sustainable, and people-centered cities and territories. The Lab was founded in 2015 based on the observation that there was a lack of structured and accessible information in this context in Portugal. It is the first of its kind in the country and one of the few in Europe. Part of the NOVA Information Management School (NOVA IMS), it values the practical applicability of information management, collaborating with public entities, companies, associations, and other agents in society to transform data into concrete solutions.

Goals

The Lab's initiatives serve three main purposes

1

Supporting governance

Provide public entities with analytical tools and up-to-date information, promoting more effective, efficient, and transparent governance, in line with the principles of smart cities.

2

Stimulate civic
participation

Encourage active citizen involvement through the use of information and communication technologies, strengthening social cohesion and shared responsibility in urban decision-making.

3

Promote environmental
sustainability

Support the transition to more sustainable urban models, with a positive impact on the economic, social, and environmental domains, with an emphasis on decarbonization and the circular economy.

Mission

To contribute to the development of smart and sustainable cities and territories through data science.

Vision

We envision safer, more resilient, and sustainable cities, in line with SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities of the United Nations.

This encompasses adequate housing, effective urban planning, advanced mobility solutions, and minimised environmental impact.
